Hi Steph. I do brain dumps. Something will trigger a cascade of thinking and out it comes. Often I will comment on someone’s Substack post and suddenly realize my response could be the basis of a new post. One thing leads to another. Something the neighbor kid did. Something that happened on the way to town. A moose in the back yard. At this point, I’m sketching, so I don’t spend much time rewriting and polishing. It bogs me down too much to try to write the perfect story.
Thank you for sharing your process, my friend ! I love that you liken it to sketching. The beauty of a sketch is its rawness. Its pureness. It comes straight from your inner voice / intuition. The only way to get there is by putting pen to paper.
A moose in the backyard sounds like something I'd like to read more about : )
I just disappeared my response, which was probably the best thing I ever wrote. Oh, boy.
But when I do my sketches, I imagine I’m telling the story to a friend and I find it flows out, along with all the typos. Later, I have material to polish and organize. It seems a little daunting to me to decide to write a book and just start writing page after page. The way I do provides me with building blocks.
I’ll post a picture on my Substack so you can see it.
Another idea that helps me unclog my writers block is to imagine I’m telling a story to a friend. Sometimes you do something or experience something that you can’t wait to tell someone about. This afternoon, I was thinking about my grandfather and thought I could make a story about him that my old guy friend would enjoy, and then the words just pour out, mixed in with a healthy bunch of typos.
Yes to the picture! And I love this approach - already thinking about how I might experiment with voice noting to get it all out of my system then listen back and type it out!!
I’ll be keeping an eye out for the story about your grandfather ! Honestly, when I read your work, it feels like I’m talking to a friend.
Happy to see you back! I've been in a similar situation in the past few months for a different reason (betrayal trauma). But I let my ideas fermented and then once I opened the floodgates, I couldn't stop, LOL! I think expectations and perfectionism are bed fellows. I often have to pull myself away from their spell. So glad you have a mentor and you are taking action 🎬 🙌
Sending big hugs and thank you for sharing vulnerably as always 💖 I'm always inspired by your words, experiences and stories. Thank you for choosing to be here!
I could agree more - lol I'm envisioning expectation and perfectionism as little bedbugs plotting to take over your brain 😅 You bring up a powerful point - "I often have to pull myself away." Thank you for reminding me that we have the power to choose differently. To show them who's boss!
